The Michele Brangwen Dance Ensemble premieres KATSU, a new work with choreography by Michele Brangwen; music by Tim Hagans and Thomas Helton; film, and live camera.
KATSU celebrates the forces unleashed when the restrictions of one's environment are overcome. The entire FotoFest Vine Street complex becomes the stage as dancers and musicians travel the historic galleries.
Michele Brangwen writes: “In expanding and developing KATSU, I’ve been exploring the ways we connect different locations in performance through film and live camera. KATSU explores how we move out of our current surroundings, literally and poetically. This is what Russian photographers have been doing for years: using their art to take them to another realm. Our sense of place is really a mysterious thing. Are we in a holding pattern, a plateau, or exactly where we need to be?”
KATSU is performed by Brooke Barnes-Meeks, Scarlett Barnes, Lindsey McGill, Robin Gilbert and Michele Brangwen, dancers; Tim Hagans, trumpet; Seth Paynter, saxophone; Thomas Helton and Scott Lee, acoustic bass; Fung Chern Hwei & Gregor Huebner, violin; Jeremy Choate and Yunuen Perez Vertti, live camera.
