HSPVA Spring Jazz Festival featuring David Caceres and Berklee faculty Rick Peckham
by Warren Sneed Published: Mar 06 2005
The High School for the Performing and Visual Arts 29th Annual Spring Jazz Festival will be held Thursday and Friday, March 10-11, 7:30pm each night. The festival will feature performances by the HSPVA Jazz Big Bands and Combos. Guest artists for the two-night event will be David Caceres, saxophone, and Berklee School of Music faculty member, Rick Peckham, guitar (Friday only). Rick Peckham is an internationally known jazz guitarist, clinician, composer and writer. He has performed with George Garzone, Jerry Bergonzi, Mike Gibbs, and Dave Liebman, and recorded the album StrayDog (ropeadope.com) as a member of the highly original jazz ensemble Um, led by trombonist Hal Crook and featuring organist John Medeski. Saxophonist and vocalist David Caceres is arguably the most sought-after jazz musician in Houston, Texas, which is not at all surprising considering his accomplishments and musical heritage. David's grandfather, jazz violinist Emilio Caceres, led a popular swing orchestra in San Antonio, Texas in the 1930's & 40's. His great uncle Ernie Caceres played saxophone and clarinet with the Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, and Woody Herman big bands; David himself cultivated his own talents at Boston's prestigious Berklee School of Music. After his consummate schooling David headed to the Big Apple to cut his musical teeth. Yet, with his genetics, it is no wonder he returned to his roots to stake his musical claim. Now he has become a veritable Texas Tradition juggling an incredible performance, recording, and teaching career. Tickets for the festival are $5 for each evening. HSPVA is located at 4001 Stanford at W. Main. For more info, call 713-942-1960.
