Mike Check! The Jazz Event of the Season!
The area’s top jazz groups are playing back-to-back in Houston for a worthy cause. Don’t miss Mike Check!, a giant Music Festival benefitting Mike Nase on Sunday, May 17, 3:00 to 10:00. The event is sponsored by The Houston Musicians’ Benevolent Society and Houston Community College, and will be held at the HCC Town & Country Campus Performing Arts Center, I-10 at Beltway 8.
Great artists and their groups will be featured, including, Bobby Lyle, Kellye Gray, David Caceres, The Joel Fulgham Big Band, Kelly Dean, Dana Rogers, Houston Jazz Quartet, Jane Vandiver, Horace Grigsby, Bob Henschen, Mark Dini, Brennen Nase, Yvonne Washington, Art Fristoe Group, Matt Lemmler and Diane Landry with the Jazz MaDi Band, The Bopmeisters, Pamela York, Mike Wheeler, Tianna Hall, and Sharon Montgomery. The festival music will be continuous, with two groups each hour from 3:00 until 10:00.
The festival will benefit Mike Nase, an extraordinary Houston jazz guitarist. Mike suffered a stroke earlier this year, which left some paralysis in his left hand. Mike is progressing well with his therapy and is hopeful of a full recovery. Meanwhile, his income is reduced and medical bills are not fully covered by insurance. Mike’s friends, colleagues, and fans are producing the benefit to help Mike through this difficult time.
John Calderon: “Mike Nase Is the patriarch of Houston jazz guitarists.” Mike has performed and recorded extensively in various musical genres, always forging new ground. One interesting collaboration was a guitar duo with Mike Nase and Mike Wheeler, backing up jazz singer, Tianna Hall. This group entertained regularly for over three years at Downing Street Pub, in Houston.
Compact discs featuring Mike Nase will be available in the lobby. Another way to help Mike is to be a customer of “The Not-So-Silent Auction.” This unique silent auction features offerings of music groups to entertain for you at a future function, and also, offerings of music lessons of all kinds.
Admission to Mike Check! is $25.00, and will include a wrist band, for easy re-entry. For more information, to donate, buy tickets, and order deluxe box lunches from Jason’s Deli, visit www.MikeNaseMusic.com. Tickets will also be available at the door.
