Lessons in Jazz
A year at Texas Tech was great but I am happy to be back in Houston.
No more formal academia for me - at least for the time being - but I will be teaching some privately and I post this for those who may be interested.
I have room for about six students and I am interested in teaching musicians who want to make a commitment to excellence and achievement - just about any level - from high school to college post-grad to professional to adult amateur. The level of your current skill is not so much an issue to me as your desire to get better and your willingness to work to do so.
Instruction is available in the following subjects:
• jazz piano
• jazz theory
• jazz improv (for instruments other than piano)
• traditional theory
• counterpoint (tonal and/or modal)
• composition (some theory prerequisites)
• jazz vocal coaching*
*I am not a voice instructor. I coach singers in the jazz/pop style and help prepare them as gigging musicians in the professional world. You may also need a voice instructor. If you have one that you work well with, you should definitely keep him/her in addition to this course. The same is true for classical pianists who should continue their classical studies in addition to what we do in my studio.
If you can be specific about what you want to study, we can design a curriculum that will best serve you.
