About
Galen was born in New Orleans, and raised in New Jersey and Houston. He has been playing saxophone since 1973. He studied privately for several years with the late Ed Trongone (saxophone) and later with Tony Campise (clarinet.) In the late 70s Galen was gigging around Houston with a couple different combos, and he was an occasional substitute for several of the big bands.
As a 1979 graduate of Houstons Memorial Senior High, Galen was an award-winning soloist who won full music scholarships to both North Texas State University, and the University of Houston. However, for various reasons, Galen chose a career in Chemical Engineering and he graduated from Texas Tech University, with a B. S. in Chemical Engineering in 1984. Galen is a licensed professional engineer, and an expert in loss prevention engineering, specific to large manufacturing, and chemical, and industrial locations. Galen is a Manager for FM Global, which the worlds largest property insurance company specializing is loss prevention engineering for large global accounts.
Galen is a frequently called upon for freelance work such as weddings, theater work, and as an accompanist with various local combos. Galens credits include work in the orchestra pit on Jesus Christ Superstar, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Circles of Love, Life at Terrace Manner, and the Country Playhouses presentation of The All Night Stut. Galen has performed on stage with the rock band Big Left Turn as well as local greats including Tom McKinney, Kathleen Knight, Jack Kastle, Grace Givens, Gary Smith, Kay Emberg, Steve Riley, the incomparable Glennie Scott, "Cheap Therapy," the Landon Peterson Jazz Trio, and others.
Galen has been a regular accompanist for various groups at Ovations Night Club in the Rice Village.
Galen can be heard regularly playing with the Houston Hi-Rollers Big Band. Galen is a regular member and featured soloist in the praise band at Terrace United Methodist Church.
